How Does Flood Damage Happen?

Recovering from a flood

Though stormy days and nights may be enjoyable for those of us who like resting at home, listening to raindrops, flood damage can occur making this experience far less enjoyable. This damage is unfortunate to experience and can take place when you least expect it. It’s easier to prepare for once you learn how flood damage can actually happen.

Excess Water Is too Much for Pipes

Flooding can normally take place when a large amount of rain has traveled and made its way toward your pipes. The excessive amount of rain can run down to the drainage that is located underground. This ends up flooding the pipes down there. This usually keeps the water from draining properly, which results in flood damage to your home.

Strong Winds Damage Home

When it’s raining intensely outside and a flood is forming, sometimes the rainstorm can bring wind along with it that ends up breaking the windows of your home. This can make an easy entrance for water to get into your home, and the interior can be damaged due to too much water

The Flood Water Becomes Contaminated

When your home is taken over by a flood and the water accompanying it, various toxic chemicals can creep in. This is due to the fact that bacteria, mud, chemical toxins and different sewage chemicals are located inside of this floodwater.

Due to this, your water is no longer purified, which makes it more damaging to your home. Chemicals from waste and spillage have also formed inside of the water, making it harmful to your home as well.

Mold Damage Forms

After the contaminated floodwater sits in the various areas of your home for too long, mold can begin to grow. It grows the strongest when there is a large amount of moisture forming inside of a home with extra humidity. This is why a lot of molds commonly grow inside of your basement, so make sure to check down there when a flood has taken over.

Cleaning Up After the Damage

Once this damage occurs in your home, you’re going to want to begin cleaning up after it before further damage takes place. Get rid of any flooded belongings in your home, as these may contain harmful bacteria that formed from the floodwater.

Go through your items like your rugs, furniture, mattresses and more. If they have been wet by floodwater for longer than a day, they’re most likely damaged and will need to be thrown out. If you have any non-fabric types of items such as plastic or glass belongings, there is a good chance they haven’t been damaged from the flood. Dry and disinfect these items as soon as you can to have them properly cleaned and saved.
